An investigation is underway after a dismembered body was discovered in the basement of a New York apartment building on Sunday.
Workers at a Brooklyn apartment reportedly discovered Michelle Montgomery, 39, in a plastic bag in the building’s trash compactor. An employee said the area where Montgomery’s mutilated body was found is typically locked and not accessible to residents, according to the New York Daily News.
The publication also reported that Montgomery’s death is being investigated as a murder, though how she died remains unclear. The New York City medical examiner’s office confirmed to The New York Times that an autopsy was conducted, but they are reviewing additional information before making a final determination.
Montgomery’s husband told the New York Post that she went out with friends on Saturday, which was not a common occurrence because she was always with their three children.
“She said she was just going out with friends,” the husband said. “I didn’t know them.”
It is unknown whether Montgomery had any connection to the apartment building where her body was found on Sunday. The New York Post reported, however, that it was located less than four miles from her home.
No arrests have been made.
