Teen Girl Missing Since 2008 Deemed a ‘Runaway’ Despite Never Running Away Before

The search continues for a 16-year-old girl who vanished in Missouri in 2008.

Shemika Cosey attended a sleepover at her cousin’s home in Berkeley a few days after Christmas. The pair watched videos until the early morning — before Cosey’s aunt discovered she was missing and the front door was unlocked, according to KSDK.

Cosey’s purse and jacket were also were gone, but her clothes and overnight bag were still in the home.

While Cosey was deemed a runaway, her family maintains she would not have left on her own.

“She was classified as an endangered runaway, and I’m not understanding why she was even considered as a runaway because that was her first time ever going missing,” Cosey’s mother told KOMU last year.

Cosey would be 33 today. She is believed to be in the area, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, who created an age-progression image of her in 2024.

Cosey was described as standing 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighing 135 pounds, and having black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts should call Berkeley police at 314-524-3311.

Cosey’s case is being covered as part of CrimeOnline’s “Finding the Lost: Black and Missing” series, which will feature a missing Black person every day in February. The full series can be read here.
