4 Arrested After Florida Toddler Drinks from Sippy Cup Laced With Meth

Four Florida adults adults were arrested last week after a 1-year-old child drank from a sippy cup with a bag of methamphetamine at the bottom.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office indicated the parents of the child were involved but did not specify which of the four people were the baby’s parents. They were probably 21-year-old Hayden Simmons and 21-year-old Damien Windham. The other two were Erica Foley, 45, and Judith Addison, 79. All four were “permanent residents” of the home.

The sheriff’s office learned of the incident from the state Department of Children and Families on February 24. The child welfare agency said the baby had ingested meth the previous day.

Deputies said the baby drank from the sippy cup with meth at the bottom, but the parents decided to monitor the child overnight rather than contact authorities. The the child began vomiting later that night, the mother took the baby to a nearby fire station. The child was later admitted to a hospital for treatment of a possible overdose.

“This is a heartbreaking and completely preventable situation. A one-year-old child was exposed to a dangerous, illegal drug because the adults in that home failed to provide even the most basic level of care and protection,” Sheriff Bill Leeper said. “There is absolutely no excuse for methamphetamine to be within reach of a child.”

Deputies executing a search warrant found various drug paraphernalia, including pipes and contains with meth residue.

All four adults face child neglect charges, and Foley faces an addition charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Only Foley remains behind bars with a bond of $12,504, according to jail records.

Records do not indicate the status of the child or if the child was handed back over to the parents when they bonded out.
