A 40-year-old Mississippi mother has been arrested after investigators found her daughter’s remains inside her apartment.
Southaven Police said they launched an investigation on Tuesday after a man reported that he had not seen his sister since January, WHBQ reports. The sister was unable to care for herself, he said.
Investigators went to the mother’s apartment, but Cynthia Clemons gave conflicting information about her daughter’s whereabouts. Police returned with a search warrant and found the missing woman’s body inside a closet in the apartment. according to WREG.
Family members identified the dead woman as 20-year-old Mykryra Clemons, who had Down syndrome. Investigators say she had been dead for some time.
Clemons was arrested on charges of abuse of a vulnerable person and tampering with evidence. Investigators said more charges may be forthcoming after the results of an autopsy are in.
She is due in court on March 25.
