Mystery Surrounds ‘Suspicious’ Death of 14-Year-Old Girl Who Vanished During Snow Storm

South Dakota officials are awaiting autopsy results in the case of a 14-year-old girl who was found dead after disappearing earlier this month.

McKenna Wendel vanished from Sioux Falls on March 13, six days before her body was discovered 50 miles away near Brookings. The circumstances surrounding her death are unknown, but NewsNation reported that police have described it as “suspicious.”

According to KSFY, police said they recovered evidence suggesting Wendel’s death was suspicious. However, they did not reveal what was found to make this determination.

Almost a week later, little is known about Wendel’s disappearance and death. The Argus Leader reported that Wendel had vanished during a winter storm and that her body was discovered along a drainage creek. A citizen tip led police to her body, according to KELO.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said Wendel’s autopsy began on March 23. They expect the report within a week, he said.

No arrests have been made, and officials have not named any suspects or persons of interest in this case.
