Samuel Olson: Blunt head trauma killed 5-year-old boy, autopsy says

A 5-year-old boy found dead in a Texas hotel room last week has been officially identified as Samuel Olson, and an autopsy determined the boy was murdered by blunt head trauma.

The woman arrested in Samuel’s disappearance — Theresa Balboa — appeared in a Harris County court Monday on a charge of tampering with evidence/human corpse and is likely to face more charges in the wake of the autopsy results, KTRK reported.

Balboa was found in a hotel room in Jasper, Texas — more than 130 miles northeast of Houston — last Tuesday, as CrimeOnline previously reported. The decomposing body of the young boy was in the room.

Balboa was out of jail on bond for an assault case in which Dalton Olson, Samuel’s father, was the victim. Dalton Olson reported his son missing on May 27, presumably after Balboa, whom he was dating,  told him that Samuel’s mother and a man dressed as a police officer came to her home and demanded she hand over the little boy.

Balboa gave the same story to the police and the media after Samuel was reported missing, but Samuel’s mother was able to provide evidence that Balboa was not telling the truth.

An arrest affidavit shows that Balboa called her roommate on May 10 and told him that Samuel was dead. The roommate came to the apartment and allegedly helped Balboa move the boy’s body into the bathtub and three days later into a storage unit.

On June 1, a friend of Balboa’s called in a tip that Balboa could be found at a hotel in Jasper with the boy’s body, sending Jasper police to the hotel.

Balboa was transported back to Harris County on Friday. She was already being held on a $500,000 bond on the tampering charge, and on Monday, the judge raised her bond in the assault case to $100,000.

Prosecutors said they believe Balboa was on her way to Louisiana when she was arrested in Jasper.
