An attorney for the mother of Mallory Beach, the 19-year-old killed in Paul Murdaugh’s 2019 boat crash, filed a notice Wednesday to secure personal property belonging to Alex Murdaugh should he lose a wrongful death lawsuit filed against him, his son Buster, and a gas station that sold the 22-year-old Paul Murdaugh alcohol when he was underage.

The move came as the South Carolina legal scion’s financial woes grabbed headlines and at least three insurance companies have declined to provide coverage to Alex Murdaugh related to the fatal boat crash, saying if he didn’t know about his son’s underage drinking, he certainly should have.

FitsNews reported that Mark Tinsley, Renee Beach’s attorney, served notice that liens could be placed against the 1,770-acre property in Hampton and Colleton Counties — where Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were found shot to death in June — and a coastal property in Edisto Beach.

A hearing had been scheduled in the wrongful death suit on June 10, three days after the murders, but it was postponed and has not been rescheduled. The judge was expected to rule on a motion requiring the Murdaughs to provide financial documents, which they’d refused to do, and to move the trial from Hampton County to Beaufort County, where the crash took place.

Court documents say that the Murdaughs have a $500,000 insurance police on their boat, but Philadelphia Indemnity has sued Alex and Buster Murdaugh, the older son of the family, to deny up to $6 million in coverage for the lawsuit.

According to Philadelphia Indemnity’s lawsuit, Paul Murdaugh was “highly drunk,” “belligerent,” and “intoxicated” when he drove the boat into a bridge piling on Archer’s Creek, the Daily Mail reported. Mallory Beach was thrown from the boat, and her body was found a week later, as CrimeOnline previously reported.

The insurance company said in the lawsuit that it had no obligation to indemnify Alex Murdaugh from damages because he “had knowledge or should have had knowledge that his minor son illegally purchased and consumed alcohol on a regular basis by using or displaying the driver’s license of his adult son, (Buster) Murdaugh,” the Daily Mail said.

FitsNews said that two other insurance companies have also denied coverage for the lawsuit, identifying them as QBE Specialty and Homeowners of America.

The past week has been a whirlwind of news in the Murdaugh cases. On Friday, Alex Murdaugh’s law firm, PMPED, pushed him out after a forensic accounting of the firm’s finances found that he had misappropriated funds, reportedly in excess of $1 million, as CrimeOnline reported. The following day, Murdaugh called 911 to report that he’d been shot on a remote, rural road while changing a tire. He was lifeflighted to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, for treatment of a “superficial” wound, and upon his release on Monday, announced his resignation for PMPED, the firm founded by his great-grandfather, and said he was going into rehab.

On Tuesday, a reporter working the Murdaugh story told Nancy Grace he’d learned that Maggie Murdaugh had ordered a forensic accounting of the family’s finances before her death.

The following day, investigators said they had found a knife they believed was used to puncture the tire on Alex Murdaugh’s SUV on Saturday — and it belonged to Murdaugh himself. The same day, the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s office, where Alex Murdaugh had been a volunteer prosecutor for years, said it was barring him from further volunteer work, and the state Supreme Court suspended his law license.

On Thursday, the Daily Beast reported that the initial incident report on Saturday’s alleged shooting said that Alex Murdaugh did not have a “visible injury.” That account was disputed by Hampton County Sheriff T.C. Smalls, who said it was likely an error.

No arrests have been made in either the June shooting deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh or the shooting on Saturday. Additionally, police have not released any description of a suspect in the Saturday shooting or a suspect vehicle.
