Trump Lawyers at Justice Department Amid Classified Documents Probe

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump met with the Justice Department for less than two hours on Monday amid an ongoing investigation into his alleged possession of sensitive national security documents.

CBS reported that attorneys Evan Corcoran and Lindsey Halligan were seen entering the DOJ’s offices. Though officials have not disclosed the nature of the meeting, two of Trump’s other lawyers had requested a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland about two weeks ago.

According to Politico, special counsel Jack Smith is close to deciding whether Trump will face charges for last year’s incident which involved the National Archives retrieving 15 boxes of classified documents following ongoing negotiations. Months later, the FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate to obtain additional sensitive documents.

Sources told CBS that Garland did not attend Monday’s meeting. They also claimed that Trump’s lawyers have become frustrated with the Justice Department’s handling of attorney-client matters stemming from the ongoing investigation.

For instance, prosecutors for the special counsel have urged Corcoran to disclose details of a call he had with Trump in June 2022 — around the time investigators sought documents and surveillance footage from Trump’s home.

Smith has not yet commented on Monday’s meeting.
