14-Year-Old Boy Shot and Killed While Teens Were Filming Video With Stolen Gun

A 16-year-old Detroit boy shot and killed another teen early Thursday morning while playing with a gun stolen from a vehicle earlier in the week.

Detroit Police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald said three teens — 16, 15, and 14 — were “trying to shoot some kind of video and use real guns with real bullets, and unfortunately, we lost a 14-year-old.”

One of the other teens carried the wounded boy downstairs in the house, police said, but there was a delay calling 911, likely because the adults in the home were covering up illegal activity before calling in authorities, WJBK reported.

“Lot of stolen goods at this home. There were stolen car fobs,” Fitzgerald said. “Told by some of the neighbors they were moving some of the stolen cars prior to (our) arrival.”

The 16-year-old gave police a fake name and then fled from the scene. The 15-year-old was taken into custody.

The 9mm handgun used in the shooting was stolen from an unlocked car in Chesterfield Township, Fitzgerald said. And the slain boy had been staying at the home with a friend and his mother since December.

Police seized eight cell phones from the house and said it wasn’t clear if the boys were recording or streaming live on social media at the time of the shooting.
