Long Island Serial Killer Suspect Rex Heuermann Off Suicide Watch

Accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is off suicide watch as he remains behind bars while facing charges in connection with the murders of multiple women.

The development was first revealed Sunday in the Investigation Discovery television show “ID Special Report: The Long Island Serial Killer,” hosted by CrimeOnline’s Nancy Grace.

Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. then issued a statement Monday confirming the news.

“Mental health staff at the jail have made the determination to remove Rex Heuermann from suicide watch at this time,” Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. said in a written statement, according to Fox News. “He will continue to be evaluated periodically. His housing and security protocols have not changed.”

Further, the sheriff’s office continues to take “extra precautions” in holding Heuermann, sheriff’s spokeswoman Victoria DiStefano told Patch.

Heuermann previously was not allowed any reading, but Toulon told Grace that the accused serial killer now has two books in his cell and can partake in recreation.

Authorities took Heuermann into custody July 14 on a Manhattan sidewalk near his architectural office. He faces charges of first- and second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Amber Costello, Melissa Barthelemy and Megan Waterman, whose bodies were found buried on Long Island in 2010. He is also the prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

Investigators across the country are exploring whether Heuermann might be involved in other unsolved cases.

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison without parole.
