Former Suffolk County Police Chief, Who Oversaw Gilgo Beach Probe, Arrested for Solicitation in Public Park

Former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke was arrested Monday morning for soliciting sex at a park in Farmingville.

Burke ran the department from 2005 until 2012, when he was convicted of beating up a suspect in custody and covering it up, and oversaw the investigation into the Gilgo Beach killings during that same time. His handling of that case, particularly his decision to end cooperation with the FBI, has been sharply criticized, especially with the arrest of Rex Heuermann in July as a suspect in some of the killings, WABC reported.

Suffolk County park rangers said they were conducting a plain clothed sting operation Monday morning to respond to complaints about activity at the county’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park, News 12 said. The rangers said they didn’t know who Burke was until he identified himself, and then it appeared he was hoping to avoid arrest.

“He was expressing to us how this would be a public humiliation for him and such,” ranger Sgt. Brian Quattrini said.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said Burke has been charged with offering a sex act, public lewdness, indecent exposure, and criminal solicition. He may face additional charges, Harrison said.

Burke served 46 months in prison for his 2012 conviction.
