Anna Sorokin, the German con artist who inspired the Netflix show “Inventing Anna,” says she shouldn’t need to continue apologizing for swindling Manhattan’s elite out of more than a quarter of a million dollars.
In a combative interview that aired Friday on NewsNation, Sorokin said she wants to move on with her life.
“I said that I regret a lot of decisions I made when I was younger, and I think I should be afforded a chance to move on with my life,” Sorokin told anchor Chris Cuomo. “How many more times shall I apologize? I repaid my restitution in full before I was released from prison. How many people can say that?”
Sorokin was convicted in 2019 of theft and larceny for stealing $275,000 from New York socialites, hotels and banks while pretending to be a wealthy heiress named “Anna Delvey.” A judge had sentenced her to four to 12 years in prison, but she was released last year for good behavior.
Six weeks later, immigration authorities detained Sorokin for overstaying her visa. She was released on bond and is awaiting the court’s decision under house arrest in an apartment in the East Village.
Legal issues for the German national continue to mount. She told Cuomo that she is appealing both her immigration case and issues still related to her criminal conviction. She is also being sued by a former attorney to collect $152,000 in allegedly unpaid legal fees, as CrimeOnline previously reported.
Sorokin is now launching a podcast and is the subject of a reality TV show.
Asked what she wants to do with her life if she is allowed to stay in the United States, Sorokin told Cuomo: “Just move on from the whole thing. There are so many inaccuracies that’s been portrayed in the media just because people don’t bother to do their research. And just move on from the whole thing.”
